as a non-pterosaurologist, I can confirm that the full-page colour plates add a great deal to the enjoyment of the book; in fact, as I was reading the text, I kept looking back to the plates to see if I could spot the features (shown on the more simplistic diagrams) on the 'realistic' plates to set them in context. The sheer volume of text means that this book doesn't qualify as a 'coffee table book' (which is clearly not the intention at any rate), but the artwork nevertheless provides a talking point (e.g. [to my daughter] "look how cool this guy is with the furry face").

The second thing to say is that it's entirely readable to the layman and I never really became bogged-down. The only slight exception to the readability were sections of Chapter 4 (skeletal anatomy), where new terms were sometimes introduced without explanation, almost as though the author knew so much about the subject that he assumed the terms were in common usage. As mentioned above, a glossary would have been extremely useful, but also perhaps the inclusion of more diagrams e.g. I had to look up diagrams showing the differing views of Pteroid orientation. A dedicated online sister www with squillions of diagrams in one place would provide an extremely useful glossary.

Interestingly, Chapter 5 (soft tissues), which is similar to Chapter 4, suffered none of the issues of introducing new words - indeed, Chapter 5 was one of the most engaging texts on musculature and other soft tissues that I've read in any text book! I noticed that the word count was mentioned a couple of times, which has made me wonder whether the introduction of technical terms as 'givens' in Chapter 4 was a necessity?

Two-thirds of the book are dedicated to looking at various taxa (from Chapter 10 onwards) - these chapters are brilliant and I want to take nothing away from them, but I felt they came to early (ooh, err, missus). What I mean is, by Chapter 9 we're really getting to grips with pterosaurs and general principals, their lifestyles and ecology, but (it seems by necessity of word count) a number of discussions were cut a bit short, and we're suddenly thrown into a more descriptive 'this is this' type of text. As I've already said, the following chapters (10 through 25) are wonderful, but the flow feels slightly interrupted - like we're onto another book. This is not really a criticism, what I'm saying is that I liked the previous chapters so much that I'd have liked them to have been even longer!

There's not much to say Chapters 10 through 25 - beautifully written and illustrated, of just the right length (in terms of specific details) and entirely readable. I personally might have benefited from a small timeline on every page/chapter (I had to keep shuffling back to the timeline to see where I was, geologically), but I can see why this might not have looked great (and to be fair, most people reading about pterosaurs will already know the various ages and epochs).

The final thing I want to say about this book is that it's bloody brilliant - the only reason I'm on here, reviewing this book, is because this book has encouraged (almost necessitated) me to look at other pterosaur resources. I'm off to the NHM next week - I wouldn't be going there had I not read this book.

All the best,
Dave.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07829882240688630964noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6430035742565248013.post-81925410858070522592013-07-08T13:53:23.401+01:002013-07-08T13:53:23.401+01:00Well one issue is that there's not a huge numb...Well one issue is that there's not a huge number of super-exciting pterosaur papers to report on. Pterosaur research is increasing ever more rapidly, but while there are dozens of papers a year, things that really are exciting and novel and deserve a lot of attention are not coming out once a week. That said, we could do with a bit more on here, but I'll blame the others since I'm already writing 2 other blogs....Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6430035742565248013.post-37313077372149130482013-07-03T18:15:00.838+01:002013-07-03T18:15:00.838+01:00So want this book. Can't afford it for the moment though 8( That being said, my real reason for commenting is to say that I wish that Pterasaur.net had more updates with cool new information. I understand that paleo stuff doesn't happen on any sort of set, or even predictable, time table, but that doesn't stop me from saying "but I want cool new discoveries NOW". Of course, having that attitude really just means that i should, perhaps, move from being an enthusiest to doing some sort of actual research.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17337203561567794856noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6430035742565248013.post-36768026803091061712013-06-30T10:19:46.304+01:002013-06-30T10:19:46.304+01:00All fair enough, as I say, I know there are limita...All fair enough, as I say, I know there are limitations on the author from on high, and the style and approach that you want is not necessarily what any given reader likes. So there were more observations / *my* criticisms, rather than things that are definitively wrong (like actual errors or a structure that would be unhelpful no matter what). Again, short version, it's aces.Dave Honehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15154020254590603978noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6430035742565248013.post-69384855079739859662013-06-30T10:09:44.139+01:002013-06-30T10:09:44.139+01:00Thanks for the thorough review, Dave, and thanks f...Thanks for the thorough review, Dave, and thanks for encouraging comments from everyone else. Mr. Adequate and Mauro, I hope the book lives up to expectations when it arrives!

On glossaries and links to more popular reading: excellent ideas. I hoped that the introductory chapters would be enough to give people a grounding in necessary technical terms and - fingers crossed - I think the book is straightforward enough to flick back to check terms if they're forgotten but, yes, glossaries are always useful. What didn't help prospects for things like that, though (and the explanation for the relatively short introductory and concluding chapters) is the hugely swollen word count. The final product is bulging at the seams with wordage and overshot my contracted amount by a not-insignificant amount, certainly enough to ensure that no additional pages could be added to my proposal. I did have to shed a chapter was shed during the writing process because of this, and virtually all chapters were trimmed to accommodate the full size of the book. Will certainly remember those ideas should I embark on another book project, though.Mark Wittonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02524696111911168322noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6430035742565248013.post-43643326834653368932013-06-28T13:55:31.756+01:002013-06-28T13:55:31.756+01:00I already have it and it´s a wonderfull book.
